The Hub Gymnastics Club was established in 1985 by volunteers and was located at the Aberfoyle Park Recreation Centre (The Hub). Gordon Sykes was approached by the centre to start the recreation program and later founded the competition club as Head Coach & Judge.
Within a few years the club amalgamated with the YMCA who managed the recreation centre and ran a recreation gymnastics program to become known as the Hub YMCA Gymnastics Club. Volunteers coached and managed the operations of the competition group and the recreation program was supervised by the YMCA with senior competition gymnasts giving back to their club and community by coaching the recreation stream.
The YMCA lost the management contract for the centre in 2003. The club continued to operate and formed a not-for-profit self-managed committee to run all the operational and strategic areas of the club. A good working relationship was formed between the club management committee and the new centre management (CASA Leisure) that lasted for over 10 years.
In 2013 the centre again changed management which saw the club undertake a mutual break with the YMCA and the club became a self-incorporated body and relocated to Cosgrove Hall at Clovelly Park.
After several years in discussion with the City of Onkaparinga the club returned to the area at a new location, The Hill Recreation Centre. In 2022 the facility was renamed The Paul Murray Recreation Centre in honour of Paul’s significant contribution to the Club and the Onkaparinga community.
The club has embarked on delivering new programs for the community; we offer school holiday recreation gymnastics to the public and primary school OSHC. The club also runs after school and in lesson gymnastic programs under the Australian Sports Commission's Sporting Schools Program subject to availability. More recently the club has expanded its KinderGym program to include MiniGym as a pathway to our recreation program.
The club established an Aerobics competition squad towards the end of 2017 which has grown significantly with its own recreation stream “MiniAero”. ACRO clases are now available for gymnasts ages 8 - 14 years. Intensive individual 30 minute sessions are available to gymnasts of all levels to concentrate on certain skills and gain confidence.
All these changes have been with the intent of us working towards our vision of providing the best support to our gymnasts and the best opportunities for our club and community to grow.
Our senior coaches have given outstanding service to our Club and have been awarded;
Coach of the year 2007, 2015 & 2019 awarded by Gymnastics SA

We are very proud of the contribution many of our past gymnasts have made to the club by continuing to undertake coaching and judging roles at our club. We consistently have new members join our dedicated committee and they have received community service awards from both state and federal parliamentarians.
Hub Gymnastics Club is known for its quality of our coaches, our training programs, our encouragement of parent involvement and our commitment to providing the safest environment possible. In 2021 the club moved to a paid structure for our coaches in all our programs.
We are confident that our gym sport programs help develop skills at varying levels for our community members that provide foundation skills for all other sports and throughout their lives. We are very fortunate to have been awarded Gymnastics South Australia “Club of the Year” in 2013, 2019 and 2021.
